After reading Barbara Kingsolver’s Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, I became enamored with the idea of giving up city life to go start my own farm. The vision of plucking stone fruit from sprawling orchards and tossing corn to organic chickens seemed all too enchanting – at least the way Kingsolver dreamily described it in her real-life chronicle. Thankfully, instead of hitching out to the country, I decided to keep my day job and settled for a windowsill garden instead.
But, after seeing Home Grown last week, I’m all worked up about farming again! This hour and a half documentary is about the Dervaes family’s efforts to live off the grid and raise all of their food out of their backyard. What’s incredible is that they harvest over 6,000 pounds of food each year out of their very average-sized 1/5 acre backyard. You have to see it to believe it – almost every square inch of their yard is covered with planter boxes, pots, or trellises. There are even corn stalks growing along the back fence! The Dervaes’ have become so efficient at backyard farming that they sell surplus produce to local restaurants.
The second half of the documentary talks about how the Dervaes started working on other ways to become more self-sufficient once they got the hang of urban farming. They now raise chickens and goats, produce their own biodiesel, and even nixed washing machines and hot water to cut down on their electricity bills.
Obviously, the Dervaes family’s farming practices are a bit extreme. Not everybody is willing to transform their entire backyard into an urban farm or take cold showers. But what is encouraging – and exciting to think about – is that you don’t need a farm, per say, to grow your own food. The Dervaes’ proved that so long as you are willing to sacrifice a bit of lawn and put in some man hours, you can enjoy farm fresh foods right outside your back door!
