It looks like swine flu isn’t the only epidemic sweeping the country this Fall…there’s a shortage of pumpkins! According to Saveur, many farmers are nervous that their pumpkin crops won’t be ripe in time for Fall festivities because foul weather and diseases damaged their seedlings.
For somebody who delights in all things pumpkin (pumpkin pie, pumpkin cheesecake, jack-o-lantern carving, pumpkin lattes, pumpkin butter, roasted pumpkin seeds, pumpkin-scented candles…okay, you get what I’m saying), this is dev-a-stating.
After reading this, I made a mad dash to the farmer’s market to greedily load up on as many sugar pie pumpkins as I could carry. I’m planning to hit up the supermarket tomorrow to ravish the shelves for organic canned pumpkin as well. I might not be prepared for the next big San Francisco earthquake with bottled water and tuna, but by god I will have pumpkin!
Is anybody else concerned about this??

I heard the same devastating news on NPR as well!!! Apparently in Colorado there has been too much rain and it’s making the pumpkins squishy or something (don’t quote NPR on the ’squishy’ part).
I witnessed this sad and little-known fact when my friends and I drove down to a pumpkin patch in Broomfield, CO. The fun thing about this local pumpkin farm is that you get to cut your own pumpkin off of the vine. Unfortunately though, since there were so many rotting and frozen pumpkins they actually had to gather the best options and place them in crates along the side of the road. Though we didn’t get to cut our own pumpkins we still had a blast and I would recommend this activity to anyone looking for a festive Halloween day-time activity!!
