Tucked amongst the boutique shops and restaurants in Hayes Valley is a quaint restaurant I’ve had on my “must eat at” list for a while now. Bar Jules is a well known place amongst locals that proudly claims to “serve produce from the best small farmers in the area and is committed to providing sustainable meat and fish”. So being that we’re on a quest to support local food, this place is right up our alley. And an out-of-town family visit gave me the perfect excuse to head over for a taste.
Walking through the front door, my boyfriend Kele and I were welcomed by an autumn smell so wonderful that I actually had to stop and take it in for the moment. The smell brought back childhood memories of home-cooked meals during the holidays. It was also accompanied by an ambiance that would make any romantic’s heart melt. The open kitchen lends a view of the bubbling pots and pans on the stove, jars of preserved fruits and jams line the wall, and a handwritten menu hangs on the wall listing the daily menu selection (each day’s menu is different).
While we waited for a table we ordered wine and learned that oddly enough they don’t serve any California wines. It struck me as strange that a restaurant whose menu is comprised of local food imports its wine from France, but the waitress just smiled and agreed when I asked. Once seated (note that there are only about 10 tables in the whole restaurant and they don’t take reservations), we ordered several things so we could share and get a little taste of everything. We started with a grilled squid salad and butternut squash tortellini, followed by duck breast served with a persimmon salad and scallops with leeks and potatoes, and finished off the meal with a strawberry tart and chocolate cake. I know, what decadence for a mid-week meal!
Almost everything we had was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious – minus the scallops and chocolate cake, both which lacked umph – but nothing totally blew my socks off. And I’m no wine connossier but I wasn’t a huge fan of any of the wines we tried. That said, overall it was still a fun experience and I commend anyone committed to supporting local eating. And the ambiance was killer and everything we ate was at least really good (I realize too I’m probably being hyper-critical but I blame that on the massive hype I’d been privy to about Bar Jules before visiting). Try it out for yourself and let me know what you think. While it’s a touch pricey for a casual mid-week meal, it’s definitely worth keeping on the list for a fun date night out!
