In case you didn’t know, last Saturday marked the official beginning of crab season. (I’m talking Dungeness crab people, not the other kind!) For the third year in a row, I joined in on Slow Food’s Annual Slow Crab & Oyster Festival and indulged in fresh Dungeness crab served up by the local Monterey Fish Market. Students from the California Culinary Academy simply and deliciously prepared the crab for me and about 100 other Slow Food members.
With bib and handy wipes in hand, I cracked and clawed at my crab, sucking every last morsel that my $60 ticket afforded me. Like years past, I really felt the need to savor my crab knowing that this sea creature is in danger. According to speakers Zeke Grader from the Pacific Coast Federation of Fisherman’s Associations and Paul Johnson of Monterey Fish, Dungeness crab continues to be depleted by out-of-town fishermen who flood the San Francisco bay during the season and wipe out these critters in no time. They spoil crab season for local fisherman and San Francisco diners, who then have to look to Alaska and Seattle for crab.
Senator Mark Leno introduced legislation to limit how many crab traps fishermen can use, but it’s been vetoed by Governor Schwarzenegger. To protect San Francisco’s local Dungeness crab, drop Senator Leno an email or note and let him know that you care about crabs.
