A few months ago when I decided to make fresh spring rolls I was thrown into a wild goose chase to find the rice paper wrappers needed for the meal. That is when I stumbled upon Nijiya Market in San Francisco’s Japantown. It’s a gem of a spot for all of your Japanese food needs and, since the wrapper hunt, it has become my go-to sushi supply spot. They carry fresh seaweed salad (an absolute must for an at-home sushi party), sashimi-grade fresh fish, and more varieties of noodles then you’ll know what to do with! What I love most about this market is that many of their vegetables – think daikon, Japanese cucumbers, etc – are certified organic and most of their fish lists the origin right on the packaging, so I know where my ingredients are coming from. Their wide selection of products can keep you scanning the aisles for hours…so go with an open mind and throw something unexpected in your cart!
A few tips to know before you go:
- They have a large parking lot right next door for only $2 for 1-2 hours if you can’t find a spot thanks to the infamously difficult San Francisco street parking. There is also metered parking along the street if you have quarters on hand.
- They carry pre-packaged bento boxes, rolls, and more. Perfect for keeping your Bring Lunch to Work resolution!
- If you’re shopping with another person and buying sake or Sapporo, be prepared for you BOTH to be ID’d regardless of who is paying the bill.
- They take credit cards!
