A few months ago when I decided to make fresh spring rolls I was thrown into a wild goose chase to find the rice paper wrappers needed for the meal. That is when I stumbled upon Nijiya Market in San Francisco’s Japantown. It’s a gem of a spot for all of your Japanese food needs [...]

One of Kele and my favorite take-out joints is a tiny Vietnamese place around the corner that makes an out-of-this world bbq’d pork Banh Mi sandwich and an equally divine papaya salad. While the sandwich looks easy enough to try reconstructing in my kitchen, I’ve never ventured making it on my own since it can [...]

Arugula packs a serious punch, which is why I imagine it is sometimes referred to as “rocket” lettuce. The leaves, which can be eaten raw or cooked, taste strong and peppery. Over the past few months, it’s become one of my favorite CSA box ingredients because there’s so many ways to eat it – tossed with [...]

There are lots of reasons to eat locally: it’s fresher, cheaper, supports local vendors and usually tastes better. Also, eating locally means you aren’t buying food that has to travel hundreds of miles in an air-conditioned big rig, or that has to be carefully packaged with wasteful materials to keep it from bruising or denting [...]

As people rack their brains for ways to pinch pennies during this rough economy, many will surely add packing their own lunch for work to their list of money-saving practices. And while yes, in the long run bringing your lunch to work can save you some major bucks, that is not the primary reason I [...]

Leave it to San Francisco to make food rogue. A few weeks ago, Iso Rabins, founder of Forage SF, organized the city’s first “underground” farmer’s market to give small, local vendors an opportunity to sell their food who otherwise can’t afford to rent a commercial kitchen. A dozen vendors gathered in a private house in the Mission district [...]

When I tell people that steel-cut oatmeal is my preferred morning meal, I often hear back, “but it takes FOREVER to make!” Oh no my friends, you’ve been fooled. While the directions on the box say that it takes about 45 minutes to make up a batch – far longer than any of us are [...]

Most granola bars you find lining the notorious”inner” shelves of supermarkets are laden with corn syrup, funky preservatives, and hydrogenated fats. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I counted over 20 ingredients in one box, including some I could barely pronounce like sodium bicarbonate, soy lectithin, tocopherol, and partially hydrogenated soybean oil.
Even more confusing and [...]

In my humble opinion, oats should be considered a wonder drug. I love the texture of them, the flavor, their versatility…and they pack a serious punch in terms of nutrition. Bursting with fiber, iron, antioxidants, and cholesterol-lowering properties, oats are a definite must-add to your meal repertoire if you are looking to kick off the [...]

I am such a sucker for themed drinks at Starbucks. Gingerbread, Pumpkin-Spice, Caramel-whatever latte. If it is warm, foamy and sweet (oh, and $3+ dollars), I’ll take one – and make it a grande with whip, please! Sometimes if I’m running late for work or I’ve got a busy schedule, I’ll completely skip breakfast and [...]
