In my humble opinion, oats should be considered a wonder drug. I love the texture of them, the flavor, their versatility…and they pack a serious punch in terms of nutrition. Bursting with fiber, iron, antioxidants, and cholesterol-lowering properties, oats are a definite must-add to your meal repertoire if you are looking to kick off the New Year with a healthier, heartier start. Since there are several different types of oats, I added a varieties tab to this week’s pick!
- Varieties: The most common types of oats are steel-cut, old-fashioned, quick-cooking, and instant oats. Steel-cut are the most dense, chewiest version and pack in the most nutrients, as they are minimally processed. As you move down the line of aforementioned types, the more processed of oats you will find (meaning instant are the most tampered with!). And the more processed, the fewer nutrients that stay locked into each oat. So if you are up for the challenge, try steel cut! Oat bran, the outer layer of the grain that resides under the hull, and oat flour are also oat varieties that can be found at your local market.
- How to pick: Oats are harvested in the Fall but are available in markets year-round. They can be found packaged or in the bulk section. Oats have a slightly higher fat content than other grains and so spoil a bit quicker, therefore buy in small quantities. And if buying from the bulk section, smell the oats to ensure they are fresh, free from debris, and have no moisture. If purchasing packaged oats, check out the label to ensure it doesn’t contain added sugars, salt, or artificial flavoring (you can add the real stuff at home on your own).
- How to store: Store oats in an airtight container in a cool, dry and dark place where they will keep for approximately two months.
- How to prepare: If using in recipes such as cookies or muffins, there is no need to pre-cook your oats. Just throw them in as-is. When making oatmeal, oats need to be cooked stove-top (or in the oven).
