There are lots of reasons to eat locally: it’s fresher, cheaper, supports local vendors and usually tastes better. Also, eating locally means you aren’t buying food that has to travel hundreds of miles in an air-conditioned big rig, or that has to be carefully packaged with wasteful materials to keep it from bruising or denting while in route. Think about all the waste that probably results from shipping an out of season tomato from South America to your supermarket!
Buying locally is just one step to reducing unnecessary food-related waste. Another way is to bring reusable shopping bags to the market, which is one of my resolutions for 2010! I already bring along two or three mismatched canvas or recycled-material bags with me to the store or farmer’s market. But I want to take it a step further and start bringing reusable produce bags as well.
