During a trip to Berkeley Bowl West a few weeks ago, I spent half an hour chatting with the guy behind the cheese counter and got a full run down on local cheeses. (I also got dozens of delicious samples as we made our way through each variety!) I had no idea there are so [...]

Growing up in San Diego gave me a special gene that makes me immediately drawn to anything with the word tacos, guacamole, or pollo asada in it. So usually any time Mexican food is on the menu I’m happy. That said – and I’m ready to stand by this statement – Mexican just isn’t the [...]

Yes, I made corn bread. With bacon fat. And it was goooood. Go ahead, judge me…I would if I were you.
Normally, I wouldn’t dream of saving leftover bacon fat and then adding it to a dish. But an article I wrote about earlier this week got me all jazzed up about cooking like our ancestors (i.e. [...]

If you are a fellow CSA member or someone who sticks to eating seasonally, I’m sure you are intimately familiar with our winter friend…the butternut squash. The great thing about these hardy guys is that they last a really long time and don’t need to be refrigerated, the bad news is that they seem to [...]

Everywhere I turn, it’s all about bacon: bacon chocolate bars, bacon vodka, and even bacon gum (really people??). With all this bacon, it’s no wonder people are trying to figure out how to make use of all the leftover bacon fat!

Three years ago, if you asked me to spend an afternoon hiking through a public park scavenging around for wild vegetables and herbs, I probably would have stared at you stupidly in disbelief or laughed in your face. But, my friends, that is exactly what I did last weekend…
I joined 20 other hikers (i.e. Haight-Ashbury dwelling [...]

Some people bring a bottle of wine with them to dinner when celebrating a special occasion, Kele’s family brings duck. So last weekend we hauled it up to Sacramento to partake in the annual family Duck Dinner, marking the end of this year’s duck hunting season. The dinner consists of going to a local Chinese [...]

Well, the first time I attempted Potato Leek soup, I ended up with a gelatinous pot of grey slurry that tasted like watered down mashed potatoes. Yum! In hindsight, my biggest mistake was not peeling the potatoes (hence the lovely grey hue). My second mistake was not including any flavor boosters, like herbs, wine and garlic. [...]

Work brought me to snowy Chicago last week and with the trip came a fabulous dinner at a new restaurant in the “up-and-coming” Pilsen neighborhood. Nightwood features a daily-changing menu of seasonal food from nearby farms so I was excited to see what the Midwest had to offer in the middle of winter. Turns out, [...]
