About
We are two San Francisco-based twenty-somethings who live on the fringe of the food and writing world — Jillian works as a cookware buyer for a home retailer and Christina works at a magazine – but we have no professional food training and rudimentary culinary skills. Our grandmothers didn’t roll out their own pasta dough, our moms grabbed for canned chicken noodle soup and up until recently, our idea of gourmet cooking consisted of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. But we figured we have to start somewhere, so about a year ago we signed up for a local farm’s CSA — Community Supported Agriculture — program because it seemed like “the right thing to do” (and because it’s almost a sin not to join one if you live in this area). After box after box of struggling to figure out what to do with our copious amounts of kale, leeks, and squash, we decided it was time to learn what it really means to eat local, organic, and sustainable food.
We want to take you on that journey with us. Since diving in, we have learned about an entire food movement happening right before our eyes…and we have just scratched the surface. Our blog is a combination of recipes, tips, experiences, and more that help illustrate how we’ve taken hold of our own eating habits while trying to support our local food community at the same time. We don’t expect that everyone can eat by the “local, organic, and sustainable” golden rule at all times, sometimes we want to eat a banana or mango and know that organic, free-range chicken can put a major dent in your wallet. But this journey will hopefully help all of us become more conscious consumers and better cooks at the same time. Essentially, this blog is our attempt at uncovering what you can really do when you have access to a FARM and a FRYING PAN.
